Dive In

10 May

Ok, so it has been one of THOSE days, where nothing is working as planned. So… my stress relief is to dive right on it to my blog and talk about things that make me happy.

I know I told you that we just got a new house, and I have been scouring the internet trying to find some decorating tips, tricks, and ideas. Here are a few items that have really caught my eye.

Back to Life!

9 May

Hi all!

It has been a crazy year, but it has started settling back down and I am ready to jump back on my blogging train. I have so many new and exciting ideas and I am ready to start rocking the handmade world once again!! First let me bring you up to speed on the last year…. with the crazy economy, me and my cousin had to shut down the photography studio, which was incredibly sad for the two of us, but life goes on. I went back to work and I love it, but it is not very creative and I have been itching to find my creative outlet again. We got a new house and I am in the process of setting up my new craft room, so watch out, new crafts are on the way.

The biggest and most important change is my grandmother, if you read one of my first post you know that she was sick, well turns out that she does have Alzheimer ‘s, I will be posting more about this as we move through certain stages. As for now, she is doing well, we just moved them closer to us and the rest of the family, which has made her very happy, so that is a plus. She is starting to forget more things, but it is small things, like while she is talking she forgets what she was saying. This is a terrible disease and I would not wish it on anyone! My grandmother is an amazing woman and has been my rock my whole life. I am not sure where I would be without her, my grandfather, and my mother.

I am excited to be back to the world of blogging and look forward to inspiring you with handmade arts and crafts so that you too can rock the handmade world.

The 411 on Business

15 Jun

It does not matter if you make $100.00 or $1,000,000.00 a year from your crafts, you should always treat it as a real business. How do you do that you ask? It is really quite simple, I will give you everything you need here to get started.

First step is to choose a business name. See the post What’s in a name for more information on that subject. Next you need to decide what type of business you want to be, a LLC (Limited Liability Corporation), sole proprietor, or an S. Corporation, it would be wise to contact an attorney, to find out which of these would be best suited for your company. Then have an attorney draw up the paperwork for you to be filed at the Secretary of States office in you State. Here in Louisiana, we can file our own LLC papers, and they will draw them up after filing out a short form online. This cuts out the attorney, and saves time and money. Of course only do this if you are sure of what type of corporation your company will be.

You should receive that paperwork back in 1-2 weeks, depending on your state. At that time, you should open a checking account in your business name. The IRS frowns on people who operate out of their personal bank account. If you will be selling to customers on a retail level, you will need to obtain a retailer’s occupational license. You will probably not need this if you are only selling online. It is best to check with your city or state tax department to make sure of what you need. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Make sure you are very organized with your record keeping system, from day one. It is easier than going back and trying to organize it after you have been in business for a year or two. I recommend you find an accounting software that will help you to stay organized. I really like Quickbooks, it is great with keeping all of your financial information neat and organized. This program can even be linked to your checking account for easy balancing. It also has a great report system, your CPA will love you if you have everything that he needs right there on the reports. Check out http://quickbooks.intuit.com for more information. It is a little pricey, but well worth it in the end.

Once you have all these steps set up and completed, you are officially in business. The next step would be to start working on your branding, giving yourself and business a look or style. See How to design your brand, coming up soon.

Good Luck and Congratulations on your new business, I can not wait to here more about it and to start helping you promote it.

The Bees Knees

9 Jun

I am such a lazy gardener and spend most of my resources on plants I can basically forget about such as perennials (a plant that returns more than one season).  Right now, I am enjoying the return of my Bees Balm or Wild Bergamot.  It is so pretty and herbaceous with it’s soft defined leaves and purple tufts like a crown.  I began thinking I wanted to get to know this pretty volunteer a bit better and I found a world of information, I’d like to share:

  • It makes a great companion plant with tomatoes as it improves health and taste.
  • Attractive to natural pollinators like bees and butterflies that it is very beneficial to all of the plants in your garden.
  • With a taste of spearmint or peppermint with a mix of oregano, it was commonly used to season wild game by Native Americans.
  • As the entire plant is edible above ground, it is notably used in tea or a garnish in salads.

Easy to grow, Bees balm likes a sunny spot in well-drained soil.  It is recommended to divide every 3 to 5 years.  Cuttings can be made of the roots and passed to friends.

A Crude Cocktail Hour

8 Jun

Tomorrow I leave for Florida and the once pristine white sandy beaches of the Emerald Coast…so named because the water sparkles like a clear cut emerald or did.  Sadly, we will probably be beaten there by the BP oil spill disaster as tar balls have already been reported near our resort.  It really is heart breaking  for me as I spent a many of summer swimming in the salty surf, watching the porpoises play just off shore, and walked the length of the shore until sunset.  Watching day after day of the news with no real end in site for this disaster, you, like me, probably need a good stiff drink.  Thanks to some clever ingenuity from the ladies of Dock of the Bay Bar in Grand Isle, LA we now have the Tar Ball Jello Shot!

Here’s how to make your own Tar Ball Jello Shot:

1 1/2 cups very hot, hot water

1 1/2 packs grape jello

4 oz Jagermeister

Mix ingredients until jello is dissolved. Pour into single ounce plastic cups and cover.

Place covered cups into room temperature water for 5 minutes.

Move cups to freezer for one hour, then place in the refrigerator until consuming
